Multi-way
design

(e.g. In-Ear Monitor applications)

Whether based on popular profiles or tailored targets, a good option for designing multi-way systems is to rely on Lumped Element (LEM) models. Combining electrical and acoustical networks, this predictive method allows for fine-tuning phases to match or mismatch the audio channels as needed. This approach, notably relying on Helmholtz resonators, offers the flexibility needed to shape the perfect sound signature according to the target.

Quantification of a Noise Cancelling insulation level

Invented to achieve what natural passive isolation cannot do, Active Noise Cancelling (ANC) systems typically focus on low frequency attenuation. From industry practices, two distinct topologies exist (often combined with each other) :

– The Feed-Forward method is an open-loop system where the microphone picks up noise before it reaches your ears,

– The Feedback method is a closed-loop system where the microphone picks up noise as it reaches your ears.

Once the microphones and the audio operations are properly integrated, it is important to quantify the insulation performance. This is often accomplished by using a loudspeaker to reproduce sounds that mimic the actual use case environment.

The hybrid configuration method is a combination of both techniques

Prototype evaluation capabilities

Unlike speaker systems, in-ear and over-the-ear designs are measured in a pressure field that intend to recreate our ears canal condition. To do so, the consuming market commonly uses the so-called 711 coupler, having taken its name from the historical IEC 711 standard, which later became IEC 60318. When associated to an anthropomorphic artificial ear (as well as an artificial head if needed) the whole setup allows to quantify acoustic properties representative of the use case.
