SPL CALCULATOR

Recalculate SPL at Different Power & Distance

Have a datasheet SPL but a different setup in the real world? Use this calculator to estimate the Sound Pressure Level (SPL) for your power and listening distance. The estimation relies on simple acoustic rules of thumb: doubling power ≈ +3 dB, while doubling distance ≈ −6 dB.

To use the calculator, fill in the SPL given on the datasheet (with its reference Power and Distance), then your Target Power and Target Distance. The tool outputs the predicted SPL Calculation for those conditions.

We apply the free-field model:

SPL₁ = SPL₀ + 10·log₁₀(P₁ / P₀) − 20·log₁₀(d₁ / d₀)
  • Power term (10·log) → captures how input power changes SPL (e.g., ×2 power ≈ +3 dB).
  • Distance term (−20·log) → captures sound spreading with distance (e.g., ×2 distance ≈ −6 dB).

Enter the initial values (Power, Distance, SPL), then your target Power and target Distance.

Tips for
Accurate Results

  • Units: Power in watts (W), distance in meters (m), SPL in dB.
  • Reference matters: Use the same reference shown on the datasheet (e.g., “1 W @ 0.5 m”).
  • Compare scenarios: Change one parameter at a time to see its impact (e.g., keep distance fixed and vary power).
  • Shareable: You can copy the output and include it in your notes/specs.

Assumptions
&
Limitations

  • The model assumes free-field conditions (no strong reflections) and a point-like source. Real rooms, enclosures, and directivity can shift results.
  • Close-field listening, strong baffle/wave‑guide effects, and environmental noise are not included.
  • If a datasheet quotes sensitivity at 2.83 V/1 m, convert to 1 W for your speaker’s impedance, or use an SPL value explicitly referenced to 1 W.

FAQs

Does +3 dB always mean “twice as loud”?

No. +3 dB is twice the power, not necessarily twice the perceived loudness.

Can I enter distances in centimeters or feet?

Enter meters (e.g., 50 cm → 0.5 m; 3 ft → 0.914 m).

Why might my result differ from a room measurement?

Rooms add reflections and modal behavior; the calculator intentionally models a free-field to keep predictions simple and consistent.

Need help choosing a driver for your target SPL and form factor?
