Knowles Debuts Next-Gen Multi-Way Balanced Armature Driver Models for Enhanced IEM Design

Three versatile driver combinations enable seamless integration and superior sound quality while accelerating time to market for IEM designs.

Knowles Corporation a market leader and global provider of advanced micro-acoustic microphones and speakers, audio solutions, and high-performance capacitors and RF products, has unveiled a new family of multi-way balanced armature (BA) drivers. These drivers are designed to streamline the design of in-ear monitors (IEMs) and premium earphones, delivering exceptional sound clarity and precise tuning capabilities.

Unlike traditional speakers, the stationary coil of a BA can be wound with a wide range of impedances, enhancing control over the interaction between multiple drivers. Coupled with venting options and acoustic dampers, this control simplifies crossover circuits and grants designers extensive flexibility in tuning IEMs.

The trio of multi-way driver models enhances the potential for signature sound design with combinations of precision-crafted BAs from the Knowles portfolio, including Supertweeters, dual-diaphragm BAs and automated receivers. By combining multiple drivers, Knowles covers the full sound spectrum and bridges the gap between treble and bass ranges for precise audio reproduction and superior soundstage imaging. With three pre-configured models that can be custom-tuned to signature sounds within the models’ crossover circuits, OEMs can also easily integrate the multi-way drivers into any earphone form and shell design.

Multi-way Driver Models:

T202 features a two-way crossover of two Knowles automated receivers, offering precise tolerances and uninterrupted supply continuity that makes it a reliable powerhouse for entry-level universal earphones and gaming IEMs. With a flat bass response, crystal-clear mid-range, and high-frequency extension capable of hi-res audio, the T202 provides clarity across the full sound spectrum.

T303 is a three-way crossover design that introduces a dual-diaphragm woofer bass extension to the T202 design. This patented dual-diaphragm BA incorporates two diaphragms, each housed in their own chamber and actuated by a single motor, to provide an output rivaling that of a dual receiver in a more compact form factor. The T303 features a dedicated BA for bass, mid, and treble ranges to impart clarity alongside a defined and punchy low-end. This three-way crossover design maintains an ultra-small footprint to save room for other design considerations, making it ideal for high-end earphones, professional IEMs, and premium gaming earphones.

T404 offers a four-way crossover design that introduces a supertweeter treble-extension to the T303 design. The Knowles Supertweeter features a patented coil design with reduced inductance, paired with a specially constructed high-stiffness, low-mass reed to deliver unprecedented output and a high-frequency extension up to 40kHz without requiring an amplifier. The T404 features a dedicated BA for bass, lower-mid, upper-mid, and treble ranges for a universally pleasing listening experience comprised of a punchy low-end, transparent mids, and airy and detailed treble. Suitable for IEMs designed for top music performers and sound engineers, this combination delivers superior treble output and best-in-class sound quality. T404 offers a unique sound signature, tuned closely to the Knowles Preferred Listening Response Curve. This industry-standard curve expands the treble response beyond 10kHz to provide optimal audio performance.

Leveraging its state-of-the-art highly manufacturing and engineering excellence, Knowles is developing further combination driver models to meet the needs of this industry with cutting-edge technologies, consistent quality, and improved supply chain traceability.

Each model can be customized to match any desired sound signature, catering to the preferences of professionals, gamers, and audiophiles alike. Knowles is currently sampling these multi-way combination drivers with customers.
